i'm having an elton john moment.

he's got those songs that hit you in the gut (the body's sentimentality centre.) they work especially well when you're in solitude, or well, when you're watching a cameron crowe movie. plus, they're in such a pleasant vocal range that they're satisfying to sing a long with. (my cat is a very captivated audience member.)

my listening spree, in order:
captain fantastic & the brown dirt cowboy
mona lisas and mad hatters
madman across the water (1970 and '71 versions)
sorry seems to be the hardest word (live)
empty garden
levon

and then my add got the best of me and i moved on.

(*update: no klosterman for me tonight because i'm a pissant and i didn't think about tickets until the last minute and well, that's that. that and i can't really justify leaving the house after calling in sick to work today, to stay home and cough and sneeze all over everything and watch the departed.)

QUIT JERKING ME AROUND!!

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

I got back from my road trip yesterday and slept practically all day, so it seems mildly dream-like to look back on. I had been expecting a bit of a Rock and Roll Roadtrip, our original plan was to go to Cleveland, visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and drive down through the Appalachians or down the East Coast, and end up in Memphis. I figured my travel companions would have wanted to visit Graceland, and then I'd be free to do my thing - get a tour at the Gibson Factory over on Beale, take the Sun Records tour with Eldorado for the second time, maybe get some BBQ... but the winter storms of the East totally fucked up my program. But I had my moments... I opted out of the 2nd tour of Sun, even though I have desperately wanted to go upstairs and take that picture of Rocket 88 that has been eluding me for years now. And I did get to kick it in Tupelo for a while, standing outside of the birthplace of the King, and getting the best souvenir of my life, a kitschy potholder with the recipe for Peanut Butter & Banana sandwiches and Elvis; superhot mug on it. Well, that's a lie. The best souvenir ever is this SWITCHBLADE COMB I bought at this awful, smelly giftshop in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Blog-o-random-Grammy-tidbits

- Yay on the Dan Wilson win
- That Gnarls Barkley performance was pretty cool. Kinda creepy, but I liked it. Pilots and the orange suit chorus, A+. I love Cee Lo , he scares me a bit. His voice haunts me. I chuckled as he tripped his way off the platform at the beginning of their performance. Are his teeth real?
- Mary J owned the place, her gratitude made me smile. Wow, those acceptance speeches were long. But she deserved her time on stage, even if her genre isn't always my thing.
- Interesting transition: John Legend to Corinne Bailey Rae to John Mayer. I covered CBR a couple months ago, it was an awesome show. But goddamn it, those hand gestures are pretty annoying. I totally dig John Mayer's voice, but his facial contortions are slightly disturbing.
- Seal standing next to Burt Bacharach made him look like a dwarf
- I missed the actual Police performance, but after You Tube - ing it today I was excited by the sight of them together, but underwhelmed by Roxanne. It sounded great, but I could have handled ANY other Police song.

OKAY, my question... who saw that Prince, "Thanks for enjoying the Super Bowl commercial"? That was just odd and muddled my brain ever-so-slightly.....

My first interview for How Was The Show. I'm SUPER SUPER happy I did this. Now excuse me while I go have a random dance party.
